We got here a little after they opened on a Sunday evening and were seated immediately! Since we got their close to opening it wasn't too busy and our food arrived quickly! The staff were also very friendly and helpful! The hours vary so if you do go, make sure you check first! I ordered the Ai Zaru! It came with Soba and Udon noodles with the dipping sauce. The portion sizes were good as well! I was not expecting the portion sizes to be that big and it was actually very filling. The Soba and Udon noodles were very fresh and the dipping sauce was a nice addition to the noodles as well as the furikake that was on the soba noodles! Will definitely come back! The inside was nice and clean and had some very cool artwork on the wall!
Came here on a Sunday night around 5:45 and two of us were seated right away! They do have limited hours, so it's good to check that before you go. Clean space with nice restaurant vibes, cool art and attentive staff! I got the soba sampler, which seems to be one of their more popular items. It's 5 different kinds of noodles with their soba dipping sauce. The matcha noodles are good and the vegetables on the sansai one at every flavorful (that one was my favorite!). I could've done without the grated yam and sour plum ones. The 6 piles of noodles may not look like a lot but it ends up being a filling meal! The dipping sauce is simple but tasty! Will be back again to try other items!
Came here for lunch after hiking around the area. It was my first time here and wanted to try it because my fiancé said it was really good as well as the noodle was handmade. We came 10mins before it open and there was a line already. There were only 10 tables inside so we were luckily to get a table right away. Inside is spacious and clean. Service is nice. We ordered the chicken karaage since it was one of the most ordered dish on Yelp. From the picture I thought the chicken size will be similar to popcorn chicken but was surprised by the large portion size. It was tasty and not much of flour coating so that was nice. We each ordered the hot noodle and chicken curry combination. I had udon noodle while my partner had soba noodle. Both were delicious! My udon noodle was chewy and the egg in the soup was just great. Overall, highly recommended and would come back to try the soba noodle.
Service: polite and quick Ambiance: bright and clean Food: top notch homemade soba. Chicken karaage and pork katsu don are fire Prices for 4 meals and an appetizer: $102. Can't beat it. Hit em up, yelpers!
Wait was a tad long for a party of two, but service was great and the dining area is spacious and peaceful. Overall I think perhaps we're just not huge fans of soba, but I think it was still a good experience. I liked the ability to try all the soba via the sampler. The filet katsu don comes up a tad short with small pieces of filet. It also would have been good with a bit more sauce. I think my favorite was the tempura plate. One of the best I've had with big pieces of veggies and shrimp, great texture and crunch with the tempura and good flavors. We ordered a plate of katsu don to-go so can't review that one. Overall, the price was decent for the quality and amount of food.
Ah, Southern California - the land of sun, surf, and some seriously slurp-worthy noodles, apparently. When my brother suggested this culinary gem during my visit, I have to admit, I was a bit skeptical. Little did I know, I was about to embark on a flavor journey that would have me questioning why he hadn't introduced me to this place sooner. As we sat down and perused the menu, the lunch combo caught our eye, and let me tell you, it did not disappoint. From the first bite, I was in noodle nirvana. The chewiness was spot-on, the temperature was just right, and the overall "slurpiness" factor was off the charts. I'm talking next-level slurping here, folks. And the donduri? Forget about it. The flavor profile was an absolute symphony, perfectly harmonizing with the egg and that divine sauce. It was like a mic drop of deliciousness in my mouth. I'm talking about proportions so on-point, it's like the chef had a direct line to my tastebuds. By the time we had polished off our bowls, I was already plotting my next visit. I mean, how could I not? The broth at the end just tied the whole experience together, leaving me with a sense of culinary completion that I simply couldn't get enough of. Next time I'm in town, you can bet your bottom dollar I'll be back, and this time, I'm coming prepared. Extra noodles? You know it. Sampling the entire menu? Bring it on. I'm on a mission to try every single item and achieve noodle nirvana in its purest form. So, to my dear brother, thank you for introducing me to this noodle-centric paradise. You've officially earned yourself a spot in the Sibling Hall of Fame, and I'll be sure to visit this establishment as often as humanly possible during my next SoCal sojourn. Who needs the beach when you've got slurp-tastic noodles, am I right?
Came to Tanakaya after hearing a friend rave about it a few years ago and wanted to give it a try. I met up with a friend around 12 on a Saturday afternoon and we were seated around 12:45. After being seated, we ordered a few minutes later. I ordered the Cold Soba Sampler while my friend got the karaage lunch special. It took around 20 minutes to get our food. The noodles were very tasty, with the matcha noodles tasting just ever so slightly of matcha. My favorite noodles out of the set were the Ume/shiso noodles. The tsuyu (dipping sauce) was phenomenal and really complemented the more mild flavored soba. After you are finished with your sampler set, they offer some of the hot water that the soba is cooked in to mix with the tsuyu so that you can sip on it after your meal and it was probably one of my favorite parts of the meal. I will definitely be back if any of my friends were willing to give this place a try, but I would more likely come for dinner on a weeknight rather than any of their other busy times. Pro-Tip: If it seems like there is going to be a long wait (7+ parties ahead of you) take a quick moment to walk on over to Cream Pan in the same plaza (rated best bakery in CA on yelp!) to pick up some desserts while you wait!
- Vibes: 4/5 (simple, quiet) - Crowd: 4/5 (very uncrowded at opening on weekday) - Menu: 5/5 (TONS of options) - Value for price: 5/5 (incredible) Came here with friends on Tuesday at opening, and our order was taken right away. The restaurant was quiet until about 7pm when we left. Service was quick and our dishes came out within 10 minutes! We got the chicken kaarage, which was crispy, fresh and flavorful. Squeeze the lemon over them and dip in the lemon mayo- we even dipped them in the donburi sauce which was delicious. The special combo is 19.95, and we ordered the Tanuki soba cold noodles with matcha and the filet donburi. The former was refreshing and seaweed-esque but definitely not the most flavorful dish we got- delicious savory broth with a subtle taste. The winner was the filet donburi which had a rich sauce and came with cabbage and rice, and a light salad. Crunchy and fresh- highly recommend!
